The rate for asthma-related emergency room visits among children in Imperial County is three times higher than the California state average, according to data reported in a recent LA Times article. State healthcare programs pay for many of the costs of child and adult asthma-related ER visits and hospitalizations, which cost taxpayers more than $16,000 per visit. One of the main suspects regarding the high rates in Imperial County is that it is a low-income region that also has high air pollution from farmland and industrial sites.
